Food & drink

What kind of restaurant is Sarrasin Kusatsu?

It is a crêperie in Kusatsu Onsen specialising in Breton buckwheat galettes and sweet crêpes, housed in a time-worn Western-style manor. The galettes are made with 100% buckwheat using authentic Breton methods. "Sarrasin" is the French word for buckwheat.

What is a galette?

A galette is a thin buckwheat pancake from Brittany in France, topped with savoury ingredients such as egg and ham. Where a crêpe is made with wheat flour and served sweet, a galette is made with buckwheat and eaten as a meal.

What is the signature dish?

The Galette Complète (¥1,400) — egg and ham on a 100% buckwheat galette, the Breton classic.

How much does a meal cost?

Savoury galettes are ¥1,400–¥1,600, sweet crêpes ¥900–¥1,200, and soft drinks ¥500–¥600 (tax included). A galette with one drink comes to roughly ¥1,900–¥2,200.

Do you serve alcohol?

Yes. We serve cidre — the sparkling apple drink traditionally paired with galettes in Brittany — as well as Kawaba craft beer from Gunma, wine and cocktails. Our two cidres come from Rue de Vin (Tōmi, Nagano) and Shinshu Fermentation Lab (Matsumoto, Nagano); both are dry, 8% ABV. Please do not drink if you are driving or under 20.

Can I have a crêpe made with buckwheat batter?

Yes. Any sweet crêpe on the menu can be made with the buckwheat galette batter instead.

Allergies

I have a buckwheat allergy — can I eat here?

Our galettes are 100% buckwheat and our crêpes are cooked on the same griddle, so we cannot serve guests with a buckwheat allergy. Please call +81-279-82-1105 before visiting to discuss.

Is the food gluten-free?

No. Although the galettes themselves are 100% buckwheat, they are cooked on the same griddle as wheat-flour crêpes, so we do not present them as gluten-free.
